On Thursday nights, the Iowa Memorial Union (IMU) terrace transforms into a vibrant hub of student activity.
With music, games, food, and themed activities, Thursdays on the Terrace offers more than just entertainment—it’s a key part of the University of Iowa’s Alcohol Harm Reduction Plan and a growing tradition that supports student well-being and connection.

Launched as part of a broader strategy to reduce alcohol use and promote healthy choices, Thursdays on the Terrace is a student-centered initiative that empowers student organizations to design and host engaging events, with advisors providing support to empower student leadership. Each week brings something new, from community celebrations to game nights and live performances, all designed to foster a sense of belonging and offer meaningful alternatives to high-risk drinking.
“Thursdays on the Terrace is about meeting students where they are—socially, emotionally, and culturally,” says Tanya Villhauer, assistant dean for Well-being and Basic Needs. “It’s a space where students can unwind, connect with peers, and feel like they belong, all while making choices that support their overall well-being.”
The program is funded partially by the Athletic Alcohol Harm Reduction Fund, which opened grant opportunities to student organizations. This approach not only supports student leadership and creativity but also ensures that events reflect the varied interests and identities of the campus community.
In spring 2025 alone, the program hosted seven sessions, drawing an estimated 700 students—an average of 100 attendees per week.
“Every program we ran in this year's Thursdays on the Terrace included collaboration among student organizations. We saw new and unique connections form between student leaders and groups that hadn’t worked together before. This not only diversified the types of programs offered but also brought new communities into the IMU space,” said Ian Van Anden, associate director in Leadership and Engagement. “I’m especially proud of this collaborative spirit—it’s one of the clearest ways our funding supports the mission of connection and belonging.”
More than just a series of events, Thursdays on the Terrace is becoming a tradition. Students know they can count on something happening at the IMU every Thursday night, reinforcing the IMU's role as a social campus hub.
"Creating a tradition like Thursdays on the Terrace is about more than just hosting events—it’s about building a rhythm of connection and care into the student experience,” said Angie Reams, PhD, associate vice president and dean of students.
“When students know they can count on the IMU as a place to gather, relax, and be themselves every Thursday night, it strengthens their sense of belonging and helps them feel truly at home at Iowa.”

The program also aligns with the division’s 4 Ps: people who matter, places to belong, passion and purpose, and paths to success. These pillars encourage students to build meaningful relationships, find their community, explore their passions, and develop skills for lifelong success. By offering a consistent, welcoming space for students to gather, Thursdays on the Terrace strengthens the fabric of campus life.
As the program continues to grow, it stands as a model for how intentional, student-driven programming can support both individual well-being and a stronger, more connected campus community.
