The transition to college is a significant moment not just for students, but for families as well. Whether it’s the first time sending a child off to school or the last, the Parent and Family Program provides a trusted point of contact and a sense of continuity. Offering reliable communication, meaningful engagement opportunities, and personalized support, the program ensures families feel confident and connected from move-in to graduation.
At the heart of the program is its commitment to clear and consistent communication. Families receive a monthly email newsletter tailored to the needs of Hawkeye parents and guardians. Messages include timely reminders, campus news, academic deadlines, wellness tips, and opportunities to support student success. The Parent and Family website is a one-stop hub, offering guidance on housing, financial aid, campus safety, involvement opportunities, and more.
Family Weekend is a fall tradition, organized by the Parent and Family Program that welcomes thousands of parents, siblings, and supporters to campus. The weekend features open houses and lectures, Hawkeye athletic events, and community celebrations—giving families a first-hand glimpse into their student’s life at Iowa. It’s a chance to reconnect, make new memories, and feel part of the Hawkeye community.
Beyond events, the Parent and Family Program encourages ongoing involvement, through the Parent and Family Council, a group of volunteers who serve as ambassadors for new Iowa families. Council members share insight, answer questions, and contribute to the welcoming and inclusive spirit of the campus community.
As a volunteer for Orientation and On Iowa! events, I enjoyed meeting parents of new students and sharing firsthand information about the University of Iowa. Families valued connecting with a fellow parent, and it was especially rewarding to see them return during On Iowa! week to introduce their students and continue the conversation.

The Parent and Family Program provides access to campus partners including Orientation Services, Student Wellness, Housing and Dining, and Academic Support and Retention, to ensure families have available expertise about the full spectrum of student life. When challenges arise, we can connect families to the right support systems for their students, with a shared goal of student resiliency and independence.
The Parent and Family Program is more than an email or website —it’s a bridge between home and campus. Whether cheering from the stands, navigating financial aid forms, or simply offering encouragement during finals week, Hawkeye families are a vital part of the university’s story.
