The JACK Quartet—a new-music ensemble with a long history of teaching, coaching, and performing at the University of Iowa—opens Fifty for the Future with a wide-ranging set of selections from the project.

The Elixir Quartet has been assembled for the Fifty for the Future celebration by University of Iowa cello faculty member Jamie Clark. She has brought together three of her longtime collaborators from across the country.

JACK Quartet returns Friday evening for a second Fifty for the Future program—pulling the catalog's wider range into focus.

The Kronos Quartet will work with students from the University of Iowa, the University of Northern Iowa, Preucil School of Music on pieces from Fifty for the Future.

Room 1078 is a working ensemble founded at the University of Michigan in 2015, now led by University of Iowa DMA alum Hanna Rumora.

Parataxis Quartet, led by cellist, music theorist, publisher, and Iowa City resident Joshua DeVries, lives up to its name. “Parataxis” is a literary term describing clauses set side by side without conjunctions. DeVries built the quartet around the principle.

Over five decades, Kronos Quartet has commissioned more than a thousand works, premiered them on stages—including Hancher stages—across six continents, and reshaped contemporary music's sense of what four string players can do. Fifty for the Future is a powerful and provocative expression of that work.

Audiences travel through three of Hancher’s spaces for performances by Iowa-based musicians. The format is part concert, part architectural tour, and each set brings a different texture: percussion ringing through the lobby's open volumes, a low-end duo with electronics in the club space, and a saxophone quartet in the behind-the-scenes backstage transfer area.
