Samuel D. Hunter has been selected as the 2026 University of Iowa Homecoming Grand Marshal. A 2007 Master of Fine Arts graduate of the university’s Playwrights Workshop, Hunter is one of the nation's most celebrated contemporary playwrights. His distinguished career includes a 2014 MacArthur Fellowship, as well as Obie, Drama Desk, and Lucille Lortel awards recognizing his contributions to American theater. Most recently, his Broadway play Little Bear Ridge Road, directed by Joe Mantello and starring Laurie Metcalf, earned a 2026 Tony Award nomination for Best Play.
Hunter is the author of The Whale, the acclaimed play later adapted into a screenplay for a feature film of the same name, which was directed by Darren Aronofsky. The film was nominated for BAFTA and Critics Choice Awards for Best Adapted Screenplay and received two Academy Awards, including Best Actor for Brendan Fraser.
Through works that explore themes of empathy, belonging, and human connection, Hunter has established himself as a leading voice in contemporary storytelling. His achievements have brought national and international recognition to the University of Iowa, its Department of Theatre Arts, and its world-renowned writing programs. His impact on the university extends beyond his professional success. He has returned to campus several times where he has met with students, shared insights into his creative process and career journey, and encouraged aspiring playwrights and artists pursuing their own paths. Those contributions to the university community were recognized in 2023 with the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Alumni Fellow Award, which recognizes graduates for their outstanding contributions to society, their professions, the college, and the University of Iowa.
Hunter embodies the Hawkeye spirit through his pursuit of excellence, his commitment to mentorship, and his continued engagement with the institution that helped launch his career. He serves as a powerful example of how a University of Iowa education can drive creativity, achievement, and meaningful contributions to society.
He holds degrees in playwriting from New York University, the Iowa Playwrights Workshop, and Juilliard, and an honorary doctorate from the University of Idaho.
In addition to serving as the Grand Marshal during the Homecoming Parade, Hunter will participate in a moderated discussion at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 28, in the R. Wayne Richey Ballroom on the third floor of the Iowa Memorial Union. This event is open to the public and is co-presented by the University Lecture Committee and Department of Theatre Arts.
