Missing home is a normal part of the college transition. Whether it's your family, friends, routines, pets, or simply the familiarity of home, many students experience homesickness at some point during their first year.

Feeling homesick doesn't mean you're not adjusting or that you don't belong here. In fact, it often reflects the meaningful connections you've built before coming to college. As you continue creating new routines, relationships, and experiences at Iowa, know that support is available to help you reach your goals.

Talk with Someone in Residence Education

Residence Education staff are here to help you navigate the ups and downs of college life. Resident Assistants (RAs) and Hall Coordinators (HCs) can listen, answer questions, connect you with resources, and help you find ways to become more involved in your community. A conversation with someone who understands the college transition can make a big difference.

Connect with Your Academic Advisor

Your academic advisor is more than someone who helps you choose classes. Advisors help you navigate challenges, identify opportunities, connect with resources, and develop a plan for success. Many students meet with their advisor during the first semester to talk about how things are going and ask questions about their college experience. Take advantage of the support your advisor has to offer by connecting with them soon.

Reach Out to University Counseling Service

It's okay to ask for support if you're feeling overwhelmed, stressed, lonely, or having difficulty adjusting. University Counseling Service provides a welcoming space where students can talk through concerns, learn coping strategies, and receive support as they navigate college life. Seeking support is a sign of strength, and many students find that talking with someone helps them feel more connected and confident.

Remember

You don't have to go through this transition alone. Reach out to a friend, attend an event, talk with an RA, connect with your advisor, or schedule a conversation with a counselor. Small steps can help a large campus feel a little more like home. Many students feel homesick. Many students seek support. And many students discover that Iowa begins to feel like home too.
