Katherine Esquivel

Katherine Esquivel is a fifth year from Miami, Florida majoring in psychology.

What is your favorite memory from the University of Iowa?

There are too many to pick between! I've enjoyed both big and small adventures at the University. The big ones took me traveling through multiple states and countries - but upon reflection I've really enjoyed the simple mundanities of day-to-day life in Iowa City. I love sitting on the Pentacrest or strolling through downtown and finding hidden gems or running into one of the many spontaneous events that are always going on. Or! I also really loved getting to go into an MRI machine just before this semester started and learning about brain research.

What would like to see changed in the world during your lifetime?

Educational equity. I would like it if people from low-income communities had more access to high-quality educational resources. Education is known as the "great equalizer" and there is an incredible gap in opportunities that vary from school to school.

If you could choose one superpower, what would it be?

Not have to wear a winter coat to be warm. I love Iowa but my Floridian soul was not made for winter.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

Completing my post-doc or starting work as a professor after having gotten my PhD, hopefully *fingers crossed*.

What is a fun fact that no one knows about you?

Almost no one knows I have a collection of pressed pennies! I probably have over two hundred.
