Providing support for RAs

Working as a resident assistant (RA) can come with many exciting and challenging moments. Students have the ability to gain leaderships skills and encourage others during their time at the University of Iowa. However, many RAs sometimes struggle with assisting students who regularly come to them for help. To help with these challenges, embedded counselors Patrick Galligan and Dawn Bates are providing support just for them. Since August first, Drs. Galligan and Bates have provided over 300 hours of outreach and programming to students/RAs and have served 246 unique individual students.

“RA Level Up is open to all RAs and is a space that provides individuals with the specific skills students need related to their position. It provides them with the resources and tools they need to assist their residents,” says Patrick Galligan.

Galligan and Bates also serve as consultants to RAs and hall coordinators who need support in student situations. RA Level Up continues to play a significant role in normalizing mental healthcare on campus.
