Noreasa Higgins

Nora Higgins is a senior from Brandon, Iowa majoring in English and education studies & human relations and minoring in theatre arts.

What is your favorite memory from the University of Iowa?

Last year I was invited to present a critical essay in Atlanta, Georgia for the annual Sigma Tau Delta International English Honors Society Convention. Supported by the Department of English, two of my peers and I had the opportunity to represent the University of Iowa while networking and learning with English scholars from across the country. I wrote the first draft of the critical essay in my class Approaches to Teaching Writing, and later I began to conduct research for my senior thesis within the College of Education based on the topic of my essay.

What would like to see changed in the world during your lifetime?

I would love to see more structures for support of students in higher education, particularly to fulfill the needs for mental health resources. Mental health is a barrier which not only impacts a student's ability to complete their program, but is also a barrier which may sometimes stop a person from beginning their journey as a student at all. In my current work as a Resident Assistant, I've seen a need for mental health resources which are more accessible and serve a greater range of purposes. Overall, I believe more accessible mental health resources could benefit all people.

If you could choose one superpower, what would it be?

I would choose the ability to remember everything I've read! Being able to recall studies, histories, and even stories would not only benefit me in my professional work, but it would also make for some great storytelling.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

In ten years I see myself working on a college campus, helping individual students find their passions and providing them with the skills to overcome obstacles. It's possible I'll also be completing a PhD program to deepen my knowledge and understanding of how best to support college students as they begin their journey into adulthood.

What is a fun fact that no one knows about you?

My favorite ice cream is Dove's Mint Chocolate Chunk, and I was devastated when the Clinton Street Market stopped selling it this year.
