Celebrate National Recreational Sports & Fitness Day

On Feb. 22, 1950, Dr. William Wasson formed The National Intramural Association (NIA) when he organized twenty African-American men and women from eleven different Historically Black Colleges to attend the first Intramural Conference at Dillard University in New Orleans. The NIA went on to become the National Intramural Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA) in 1975.

The NIRSA is a non-profit organization that leads in several recreational areas including intramural sports, clubs, recreational facilities, wellness programs, training, and more. There are more than 4,000 members from more than 7,000 various universities and colleges.
