Maggie Bashore is a fourth year from Underwood, Iowa majoring in journalism & mass communication and political science.

What is your favorite memory from the University of Iowa?

My favorite memory from the University of Iowa was all the excitement on campus leading up to the Iowa caucuses during my freshman year. I got to meet nearly every presidential candidate while networking and meeting some of my best friends in the process. It was definitely an experience I wouldn't have been able to have anywhere else!

What would like to see changed in the world during your lifetime?

Many of the things I want to see changed in the world during my lifetime are rooted in a lack of empathy from people in positions of power. Systemic inequalities can't be addressed if leaders are uninterested in educating themselves about the lived experiences of others, so I would like to see a greater emphasis on empathy and compassion in education. I am hopeful that future leaders will be greater advocates for marginalized communities and the well-being of future generations.

If you could choose one superpower, what would it be?

I would 100% choose telekinesis and use it to control traffic lights so I would never have to wait at a red light ever again.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

During my time at the University of Iowa, I've had several opportunities through student employment and volunteering to continue exploring my love for art and visual communications, which ultimately led me to an interest in graphic design! In 10 years I see myself continuing to expand my creative skills to support a cause I'm passionate about as a graphic designer at a nonprofit or political organization.

What is a fun fact that no one knows about you?

I went to my first Hawkeye football game in Florida! Shortly after committing to the University of Iowa during my senior year of high school, I got to travel with the Southwest Iowa Honor Marching Band to play the halftime show at the 2019 Outback Bowl.
