University Housing and Dining holds 2019 Amazing Room Contest
For students living on campus, their room is more than just a living space. It’s an opportunity to showcase their individual personality, style, décor, and background. Students are able to highlight the uniqueness of their space, by choosing to enter the Amazing Room Contest.
"I am very thrifty and love to find cheap, unique things at second-hand stores and then pair them with more modern objects"
The annual contest (hosted by University Housing and Dining) allows students to display the creativity throughout their room, win prizes, and engage with staff from the housing and dining team. The contest is open to all residents who live on campus. Students enter the contest by submitting several photos of their room and a short paragraph on what inspired the design of their room, and finalists are selected from those entries. One winner is then selected from each residence hall. Finalists receive a photoshoot of their room and are entered to win the grand prize of a $200 Amazon gift card. The winner is selected by a panel of individuals, who act as judges, from across various departments on the University of Iowa campus.
The 2019 Amazing Room Contest brought in 150+ submissions, in which 14 finalists were selected. Students won a variety of prizes throughout the contest including a coupon for a smoothie, a pizza party, and Hawkeye dollars. “I am very thrifty and love to find cheap, unique things at second-hand stores and then pair them with more modern objects,” said winner, Jade Taylor of Mayflower. “I am an out-of-state student, so I wanted my room at Iowa to resemble pieces of home. I love art and the color yellow, both of which are big themes in my room here at college and back at home.”
