Kelley Pillar: UI Homecoming Court 2018

Kelley Pillar is a senior from Muskego Wisconsin majoring in biology, on the genetics and biotechnology track.

What is a favorite memory from the University of Iowa?

I think my favorite memories at the University of Iowa are never the big moments, they are the little things that have made Iowa feel like home. It’s trying a workout class at the CRWC sophomore year and attending every week since with your closest friends. It’s meeting someone in your Spanish class freshman year who happens to be your best friend from Wisconsin’s godparents’ daughter. It’s cheering in the stands, waving to the kids, and storming on the field. And it’s staying up way too late getting to know the people you’ll spend your years with, not yet knowing the impact they’ll have on your life.

If you had a superpower for one day, what would it be?

I would love to be able to teleport. Traveling instantly anywhere in the world? Yes please. If I could teleport, I wouldn’t be late to the airport for my flight.

Why do you want to be a part of Homecoming Royalty?

The first time I saw the corn monument, I was hooked. The energy and school spirit on campus during Homecoming week is incomparable, and I am so excited to get to share my love for my school with the community this week. It is such a special time to get to honor what the University of Iowa stands for, and I am so grateful to get to celebrate our school alongside inspiring peers.

What would like to see changed in the world during your lifetime?

I hope to see our culture become more supportive and accessible for individuals of all abilities. I feel that society has created a mental, physical, and social norm for people, and those who don’t fit in this mold don’t have equitable opportunities or resources. Greater acceptance and opportunities for involvement, employment, and education for individuals of all ability status would change the lives of every person for the better.

If you had the chance to redo one year on campus, which year would it be, and what would you do differently?

I discovered the River Room’s flex meals far too late into my college career. Not just that, but I would redo my first year here because there are so many university resources I know about now that I wish I would’ve utilized sooner. I would have eaten a lot more pasta and stir fry for one, but I also would have gotten more involved, utilized academic support, and gotten more familiar with mental and physical health opportunities. Iowa provides so many amazing and diverse resources for all students, and I wish I would’ve taken advantage of these earlier!

What is a fun fact that no one knows about you?

I love ridiculous socks, and I have a pretty extensive collection. Notable mentions include multiple pairs featuring breakfast foods, pugs for every holiday, an assortment of animals from pufferfish to flying pigs, and several pairs displaying puns including but not limited to “Snailed it” and “Have a Gouda Day."
Iowa Homecoming is a week where the community comes together to celebrate Hawkeye pride. This year, we celebrate the hundredth anniversary of Nile Kinnick's birthday. For more information on homecoming, visit
