Katie Wang is a sophomore studying Marketing and Journalism, and a member of Tippie Senate. The Iowa Challenge asks students to excel: set high standards and push yourself academically.

How do you Excel at Iowa?

I Excel at Iowa through my involvement in Tippie Senate, the student advisory board within the college of business. I was selected as a Direct Admit applicant my freshman year and currently serve as the Vice President of Marketing. In my position, I maintain the organization's presence on social media and create graphics for the numerous events we host throughout the year. My responsibilities correlate to my two majors, marketing and journalism, and I love the hands on experience that I receive through this role.

How has this improved your experience at Iowa?

I collaborate with other student leaders to promote inclusion and instigate change within our school, which is so rewarding. We help make important decisions such as the name of the new business library and host events such as Dia de Los Muertos and Chinese Lunar New Year that celebrate different backgrounds. Our organization also works closely with Ken Brown, the undergraduate dean of Tippie, which is also a unique opportunity that I greatly appreciate.

What advice would you give to new students on how to Excel at Iowa?

I would advise students to make the most of their four years by involving themselves in activities outside of the classroom. Of course, academics are very important, but I have found some of the most rewarding and educational experiences of college from my extracurricular activities.

What impact do you hope Tippie Senate has on students or the campus?

Our goal is to accurately represent the voice of Tippie students. We are passionate about helping our peers and bettering the school we call our home. I hope that Tippie Senate helps students gain a new perspective and embrace different backgrounds during their undergraduate experiences.

Where do you want to end up after college or what is your dream job?

As a young adult, I would love to live in a big city such as New York City or Chicago. I am interested in pursuing a career in Digital Marketing or Social Media Marketing. I would love any job where I could express my creativity!
