Katie Cabel: UI Homecoming Court 2018

Katie is a senior from Dubuque Iowa majoring in biomedical engineering.

What is a favorite memory from your time at the University of Iowa?

I have too many favorite memories to choose from! Homecoming Week is my favorite time of the year, and I have loved participating in various events such as Iowa Shout, the big parade, and Ruckus at the Rec over the years. I've loved cheering on the Hawkeyes with friends, studying abroad in Italy with my fellow engineers, and especially being on Homecoming Court with some of the most incredible students ever!

If you had a superpower for one day, what would it be?

If I had a superpower for one day, it would probably be teleportation. I find myself in a million different locations over campus every day, so being able to transport somewhere in seconds would be ideal! I'd probably take a day off, though, and teleport somewhere warm, like Italy or Greece!

Why do you want to be a part of Homecoming Royalty?

I wanted to be a part of UI Royalty because I respect everything they stand for. To me, UI Royalty are inclusive leaders on campus, passionately involved, and overall embody what it means to be a Hawkeye. It's an honor to be a part of such a dedicated, empowering group of students to represent our wonderful university, and I hope I can set an example for young leaders to come!

What would you like to see changed in the world during your lifetime?

I would like to see more diverse STEM career-based curriculum implemented in schools of all backgrounds and wealth, especially at a younger age! I never would have dreamt of becoming a biomedical engineer as a young girl - or any career in a STEM field for that matter. UI has awesome outreach programs for K-12 students to get them involved in programs of all kinds, which are great first steps in this direction!

If you had the chance to redo one year on campus, which year would it be, and what would you do differently?

Definitely freshman year! Although I would never change the relationships I formed and the opportunities I was granted, I wish I wouldn't have been as apprehensive in putting myself out there. I would introduce myself to more people and look into different organizations! I also wish I utilized more campus resources to help me in my academics, because there are plenty!

What is a fun fact that no one knows about you?

I was born on Friday the 13th! I consider that a lucky day for me!

Iowa Homecoming is a week where the community comes together to celebrate Hawkeye pride. This year, we celebrate the hundredth anniversary of Nile Kinnick's birthday. For more information on homecoming, visit
