Joe Reed is a senior from Sumner, Iowa, and is majoring in Human Physiology.

What is a fun fact that no one knows about you?

I have been a vegetarian for over three years now!

What is a favorite memory from The University of Iowa?

One of my most favorite memories is actually when I first came to Iowa City when I was a freshman in High School. I went to a night game with one of my best friends and even stayed in Burge that whole weekend. We stayed up all night eating junk food, exploring campus, and talking about what college is like! It is what first sparked my interest in Iowa!

If you had a superpower for one day, what would it be?

I would love to be able to read minds. I often find myself wondering what other people are thinking, and I think it would help solve so many communication problems! Maybe a little TMI sometimes though...

Why do you want to be a part of Homecoming Royalty?

I am so excited to spend my last homecoming with all of the amazing students on homecoming court! I hope to show students similar to me whose parents never went to college and who grew up in middle-class households that college isn't just for those who have collegiate family lineages and limited financial barriers--if you have the determination and passion, you can succeed at a state university!

What is something you would like to see changed in the world within your generation?

I would love to see younger people feel like they have more authority in the guidance of their daily lives. A lot of people my age don't feel like they have a voice in many important conversations, but I don't think that is necessarily true! I'd like to see my generation speak up more and make their opinions heard!

If you had the chance to redo one year on campus, which year would it be, and what would you do differently?

I don't think I would redo much because I believe mistakes and failures are just chances to learn and grow, but perhaps I'd come to Iowa at the start of my freshman year instead of transferring here during my second semester. I missed a semester of Iowa Football!
