Dean of Students Student Advisory Board established in spring 2019

In spring 2018, the Office of the Dean of Students (DOS) underwent a program review and received recommendations for improving the student experience. Recommendations included increased promotion and branding of the Office of the Dean of Students office, recognition of departments, units, and staff members, communications to the student body, and the creation of a student advisory board.

In spring 2019, over 30 students interviewed for 15 positions on a 20 person advisory board. The DOS Student Advisory Board is comprised of students who are not the typical student leader, but are interested in sharing their voice, providing insight, and creating programs and policies to increase support for student success. The DOS Student Advisory Board’s charge is to provide insight on items/issues/concerns regarding students on the University of Iowa campus, discuss matters relating to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and provide advice on shaping the student experience. The Board’s advice along with the role of DOS and Division of Student Life administration, staff, and students will influence the vision, mission, programs, communications, and support and services provided.

There are five appointed positions on the board from the following areas: University of Iowa Student Government, Graduate & Professional Student Government, Cultural Resource Centers, Military and Veteran Student Services, and Center for Student Involvement and Leadership. Two additional appointed positions for the Office of the Sexual Misconduct Response Coordinator and Associated Residence Halls will be added fall 2019. Students appointed and selected to the board will serve a one year term with the option to continue for a second term. The students range from first year to senior students, with multiple majors across the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Engineering, Law, Public Health, and Business, and varied interests and service projects they desire to focus on in the coming year.

The Student Advisory Board hosted events to support and celebrate students during finals week, joined institutional committees dedicated to student success, such as the Transfer Think Tank, Code of Student Life Review, Partnership for Alcohol Safety, and the Autism Spectrum Disorder Committee, and will focus on select priority areas over the summer and into the fall. The current priorities include marketing and promotion of the Board and the Office of the Dean of Students, roundtable discussions with the student body and university administration, student engagement, increased supports and services for all students, and diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.

The Student Advisory Board is co-chaired by Angie Reams, Interim Associate Vice President and Dean of Students, and Eric Rossow, Assistant Director, Iowa Memorial Union. Additional information regarding the Board and our talented students may be found on its website.
