Bernardo Duarte: Homecoming Court 2019

Bernardo Duarte is a fourth-year student from Johnson, Iowa majoring in Psychology.

What is your favorite memory from the University of Iowa?

One of my favorite memories happened last semester when my friend and I were walking to a coffee shop right before 7am. It was a really pretty but cold day and campus was deserted since it was so early in the morning. As we walked past the Pentacrest, I suddenly thought about everything I had accomplished on campus and felt so much gratitude for all the opportunities I have had while at Iowa. This isn't a super exciting memory but one that I think about often and appreciate deeply.

If you had a superpower for one day, what would it be?

I would control time so I could freeze everything and catch up on all the work I have been procrastinating on and also binge watch lots of Netflix. Also... since I'd be controlling time, then I think I could technically make it last more than a day!

Why do you want to be a part of Homecoming Royalty?

I have loved so much of my time here at Iowa. Through involvements, academics, friendships, and experiences, I have been able to do and enjoy so much in the past 3 years. Being a part of Homecoming Royalty enables us to represent this school and student body, which is obviously a huge honor. Being a part of Homecoming Court and Royalty is a perfect culmination of our time at The University of Iowa.

What would like to see changed in the world during your lifetime?

I would like to see more acceptance of all people. We are so divided on everything that we fail to appreciate how we can work with each other to better our communities and experiences. Also, there is still a lot of hate and prejudice against underrepresented communities. I would love to see a world in which we can appreciate one another for what we each bring to the table, lift each other up, and grow together, rather than tear others down.

If you had the chance to redo one year on campus, which year would it be, and what would you do differently?

Junior year for sure. I got so obsessed with being perfect at everything I did that I forgot to take a step back and actually enjoy those things. I'm glad it happened because I learned a lot from it, but it was a rough year.

What is a fun fact that no one knows about you?

A HUGE guilty pleasure of mine is watching videos from singing competitions. It may be my lack of singing ability that draws me in, but I can watch those on YouTube for countless hours.

Iowa Homecoming is a week where the community comes together to celebrate Hawkeye pride. This year, we're celebrating The University of Iowa's impeccable history of Hawkeye champions whether they are on the field, in the classroom, or excelling worldwide. For more information on homecoming, visit
