In the fall of 2016, information was gathered to start the re-design of the housing.uiowa.edu website.
With over 30,000 user views per month, it was imperative that information be clear, concise, and easy to find. UH&D staff defined several guiding principles to help focus site design: the new website must be simple, accurate, concise, compliant with ADA requirements, and meet University of Iowa brand standards.
After collecting additional analytical data and taking inventory of the current site, the marketing team worked to lay out a site in accordance with the guiding principles. The team then took their findings to Information Technology Services (ITS) to conduct usability tests for different audiences. Findings from the tests assisted in guiding the content and site layout. Five task force teams, with a total of 20 members, were responsible for providing feedback, content, and general information throughout the process. The site was shared with campus partners, stakeholders, and general audiences for feedback The former site had 1,870 pages indexed. After the re-design was completed, the site was reduced down to 75 pages.
“The new site is so much cleaner and easier to navigate,” says UI student, Meghan Yacinthe. “It’s been helpful for me to be able direct partners and families to information. With the addition of panoramas and high-quality photos, it helps families to visualize their student’s home on campus.”
The new site was launched in September 2017 and continues to be a resource for students, staff, and the UI community.
