Melissa Shivers, VP for Student Life

In the coming days, campus will again be filled with the vibrancy that comes with a new academic year, and I’d like to take an opportunity to highlight, reflect on, and give thanks to everyone in this incredible Division and our campus and community partners for the accomplishments of the 2019-2020 year. Looking back, it is clear that this is a dedicated team, committed to excellence. I am grateful to work among you and deeply appreciate all that you do.

Providing students with a well-rounded, positive experience during their time at the University of Iowa is our number one priority. We are fortunate that our work plays such a significant role in student development. We are in the unique position to present students with opportunities for co-curricular learning, leadership, and personal growth.

As you look through the year-in-review report, you will see how the division is supporting the work of the university’s strategic plan, learn more about initiatives taking place in various departments, and be inspired by the stories of our students and staff. I hope you will take time to reflect on how our work shapes UI as a forward-thinking institution that provides students with a safe, encouraging environment in which to live, learn, explore, and flourish.

At UI, we are committed to our students and remain loyal to our mission to foster their success by creating and promoting inclusive, educationally purposeful services and activities within and beyond the classroom. You will see examples of this in the following pages, and I hope it makes you proud and leaves you feeling inspired to start another year.

Thank you for supporting the Division of Student Life. By working together, we have the power to elevate the student experience and create a lasting positive impact.

Together for UI,
